Queues have been long but the many world medallists who volunteered to take part have said wonderful things about the occasion, all of them glad to see the inspiration their openness can provide. All have been patient and happy to spend time with local judo fans.
Haruka Kaju (JPN), now a double world champion and an undefeated presence on the World Judo Tour since she first arrived two years ago, explained, “The Japanese team will always do our best to support the IJF and the host country!"
"We believe that one of our important missions, being from the birthplace of judo, is to share the spirit and beauty of judo with as many people as possible and help grow the judo community around the world. We will continue to do everything we can to fulfil this mission! Together, let’s make judo even more popular around the world!”
Local Azerbaijani heroes joined stars from around the world to sign autographs, offer words of advice and send children home with some extra magic from what has already been a tremendous championship.
