Two schools have been announced to host Olympic medallist Flavio Canto, the athlete chosen to debut on the IJF Judo Stories Tour, for a conversation about his life, success and philanthropy in judo. The first will be Payne Elementary School in San Jose, followed by Samuel Gompers Middle School in Los Angeles. In addition to speaking at Gompers, Flavio will also teach a class on the Samuel Gompers Middle School judo programme. Since 2009 the programme has been built under the direction of teacher Jose Gonzalez and the first American world champion in judo (Vienna 1984), Dr Ann-Maria Demars.

The IJF Judo Stories Tour (CLICK HERE) aims to introduce the most recognisable and accomplished judoka from around the world to California school children, spurring a new generation of fans and practitioners in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Canto will share his story, as well as the his take on the values of judo and the Olympics, to inspire the next generation to dream big and achieve greatness.

“Flavio is a positive role model, not just as an elite athlete but as a successful professional in broadcasting, coaching and as founder of a non-profit,” said Demars. “He can talk about setting goals and achieving them, overcoming difficulties and committing to a cause larger than yourself. Middle school students are at an age where young people are just forming an identity, deciding what they want to be in life. Seeing and hearing someone like Flavio will make a lasting impression on some of our youth and potentially set their lives on a better trajectory.”

“We are super excited to host Flavio Canto here at Payne Elementary,” said Denise Advincula, assistant principal of the institution. “Our teachers spend a lot of time teaching about having a growth mindset and perseverance. This will tie-in perfectly with an Olympic medallist who can reinforce these positive character traits with our students.”

The IJF Judo Stories Tour will host Ukrainian world champion Daria Bilodid next, in January, with schools to be announced soon. In addition to visiting local schools, both Canto and Bilodid will host seminars at the dojos of Judo Stories Tour partners CJ Judo in San Jose and Shimeru Judo & Jiu Jitsu Club in Lake Elsinore.
