This moment was recorded on film and has been seen widely, especially on social media, with comments about the object being earbuds potentially. The rules are clear and had that been the case, it would have been managed according to the Sport Organisation Rules (SOR).
An investigation panel was established immediately to scrutinise the recording in high resolution. High ranking members of the Japanese delegation along with Hifumi Abe, were called to meet with the French federation President Mr Stephane Nomis and the investigation panel, which included IJF General Secretary Dr Lisa Allan, and the Head Referee Directors.
Hifumi Abe gave a detailed account and stated that it was white finger tape which came loose during the contest. The video evidence confirmed this was the case and President Nomis accepted the explanation and thanked the Japanese team for their openness and honesty especially as they came to conclude the situation during Hifumi Abe’s preparation period prior to competing in the final of the world championships.
All parties are satisfied with the outcome. The IJF applaud all concerned for their positivity with managing a potentially challenging situation and also congratulate both Hifumi Abe and Walide Khyar on their new world championship medals.
