Jan Eirik's journey with judo began as a committed judo dad at Drammen Judo Club. His dedication and passion for the sport quickly led him to join the club's board, where he also served as president for many years. His efforts and leadership skills were quickly noticed, which led to him being elected as vice president of the NJF. He later rose to the position of president, a position he held from 2003 to 2009.
At the international level, Jan Eirik distinguished himself as one of two Norwegian judo figures to have held positions in the European Judo Union (EJU) and the only one with a position in the International Judo Federation (IJF). From 2007 he served as Head Director of the Judo for Peace Commission (IJF), continuing to share his passion for peace and understanding through the sport of judo.
Marius Vizer, IJF President, declared, "It is with profound sadness that the international judo family has learned of the passing of our esteemed judo family member, colleague and friend, Jan Eirik Schiøtz. Even after stepping down from his official duties, Jan Eirik remained an up-to-date supporter of the sport of judo. His commitment to judo was tireless.
