There is folklore at the root of the Madhavpur National Fair, organised annually on the seashore close to Porbandar, Gujarat, India.
Thousands of people gather every year to enjoy fairground rides, sand sculptures, games and beach life, while celebrating historic stories underpinning the local culture. This year, on 30th March, local and national government took the decision to add beach sports to the schedule and judo was included. A mat was laid on the beach and a local children’s judo tournament was held.
All participants had a great time and passers-by were able to catch a first glimpse of a sport that was new to many. The Gujarat head coach, Vrajbhushan Rajput, was pleased with the attendance and the exposure for judo and hopes to include such in event in the festival every year from now on.
