A Journey Between Tokyo and Paris
Filmed over more than three years, Louves follows the French women’s judo team between the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. With remarkable access, Cédric Balaguier captured the athletes’ everyday lives, both on the international circuit, during training sessions and in their private moments. He documented their victories and defeats, their certainties and doubts, painting an intimate portrait of champions whose stories resonate far beyond the tatami.
Introducing the film, Balaguier underlined how extraordinary these athletes are, “It was incredible to follow them over time, with complete freedom to film. Louves is a collective work, built in partnership with France Judo. It is a testimony to the strength, resilience and inspiration of these women.”
Women Who Inspire
For more than ninety minutes, the audience was immersed in the atmosphere of major international competitions, the race for Olympic qualification and the inner life of a team that has left its mark on an entire generation of judoka.
As Olympic silver medallist Shirine Boukli reminded the audience, “Women know how to fight.” But Louves goes further, showing that they are also leaders, role models and the embodiment of resilience.
“Louves is the story of free women moving forward together, no matter the adversity,” Balaguier explained. “I was struck by their strength, their femininity and their freedom. This film is about ambition, commitment and the creation of a collective. Sport needs this, society needs this.”
Recognition and Emotion
Stéphane Nomis, President of France Judo and IJF Executive Committee member, also took the stage, “From the very first meeting it was magical. It is our duty to promote women in judo and in sport. We are witnessing the greatest champions in the history of our discipline. Each of these women has something unique and it is now our responsibility to ensure this film reaches the widest audience possible.”
The screening itself was punctuated with laughter, smiles and moments of deep emotion, culminating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. For many of the protagonists, the journey now continues towards Los Angeles 2028, where they will again pursue their dreams as women, athletes and members of a collective, continuing to inspire future generations.
From Cinema to Streaming
Louves will be available from 26th September 2025 on Paramount+ and its partner platforms. More than just a film about sport, it is a powerful narrative about freedom, solidarity and ambition, and is a testament to the enduring legacy of the French women’s judo team.
