At the 2024 World Championships Kata in Las Vegas just last week, several entries hailed from Oceania, a fact which highlights the diversity of the discipline.

Officials of the Oceania Judo Union said, “Our competitors delivered remarkable performances on day 2, showcasing the strength and skill within our region. Sam Manu and Phouphayly Palilavong represented New Zealand in the Goshin-Jutsu section, delivering a solid performance and achieving an impressive score of 436 points! Their performance was outstanding and a testament to their dedication.

After a tough day 1, Bernhard and Bianca Tandean came back strongly in the u23 Ju-no-kata event. They made it to the finals with a spectacular performance and ultimately placed 6th in the world! Their incredible result in a highly competitive field, where only a few of points separated them from a medal, highlights their exceptional talent and resilience.

Congratulations to all our OJU competitors and officials! The level of the kata from Oceania is on the rise and we couldn't be prouder of the dedication and skill demonstrated on the world stage.”

With big plans already in place to extend and develop the global kata scene, it is likely that even more nations from the region will participate in the years to come.
