A few medals come between Rio and the Tokyo Games but since then there was just one medal, an Upper Austria Grand Prix bronze in 2023. Still he comes back doing what he can to express himself on the tatami and finally, in Kazakhstan, he has found his rhythm.
At -73 kg, he moved through the group with finesse, ashi-waza putting space between him and each of his opponents. What goes through an athlete’s mind after such a long time without reaching a final block, when it finally happens. How will Basile re-focus to continue this form in the final? It won’t be easy and his rival there, Daniil Lavrentev (RUS) will be unfazed by the Olympic medal or his performance in the preliminary session. Mentally, this is a massive ask for the Italian but however it turns out, this day has been a triumph for him.
Elsewhere, notable moments came thick and fast. At -63 kg Joanne Van Lieshout (NED), as the number one seed, should have had some respite in the draw, but in her second contest, a quarter-final, she was caught off guard and thrown for ippon in just 9 seconds. Dali Liluashvili (RUS) made sure her victory against the 2024 world champion wasn’t wasted and continued all the way to the final.

Van Lieshout will fight for bronze and in the toughest way possible. She should have faced Olympic and world medallist Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (CAN) in the repechage but the Canadian withdrew due to injury. The Dutch judoka therefore moved into the final block to face Olympic and double world champion Rafaela Silva (BRA) for a place on the podium.
The news at -81 kg is that none of the top four seeds made it to the final block, not via any possible route. Two lost in the repechage, two didn’t make it past round two. This is unusual but shows the quality of the category globally. On any given day, the results and form change and new champions can be crowned or former champions can be re-crowned.
At the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam, an unexpected member of the local team had the day of his life to reach the final, passing second seed Victor Stripy along the way. His arrival in the final block is guaranteed to cause a stir; his public is waiting for him. Sterpu’s teammate Petru Pelivan (MDA) will have to fight Zhalgas Kairolla (KAZ) and the spectators inside the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace; what an experience for both judoka!
In direct opposition to the events that unfolded at -81 kg, the -70 kg category delivered all 4 top seeds to their respective semi-finals. Olympic medallist Miriam Butkereit (GER) was solid from the first “hajime” of the morning session, showing her experience and confidence. She made no insurmountable mistakes and walked into the final.
Georgia Stangherlin (ITA) should have been meeting her there, on paper, but the Italian faltered just enough to let Clemence Eme (FRA) pass her, a yuko in golden score separating them. Therefore the final was set up between the first and third seeds, not the first and second.
The final block is guaranteed to provide powerful performances. Tune in to follow all the action live on JudoTV.com.
