Final: Daniele Accogli (ITA) vs Gennaro Pirelli (ITA)
This was an uncomfortable contest, very respectful but without the fire usually associated with a gold medal contest. Neither wanted to upset a teammate but both wasnted to win. Pirelli’s form is not in doubt though and he chipped away at Accogli, gradually sending the penalties his way. A third was inevitable even if it took a little extra time to get there. Gennaro Pirelli has yet another gold medal.
Pirelli was positive about his current form, "It’s been a great stretch of hard work with the team and we just need to keep aiming higher. Facing a teammate in the final is 50% bitter and 50% sweet; it’s tough fighting a friend from your own training group, but it shows how well we're doing and that's just judo."
Bronze medal contest: Leonardo Goncalves (BRA) vs Giovanni Ferreira (BRA)
This Brazilian derby appears cautious at first but after a lengthy pause for minor first aid treatment for Ferreira, the fight opened up and Goncalves threw Ferreira with a smooth o-guruma for a waza-ari. This was the only score of the contest and so Ferreira would leave without the medal while his compatriot would collect the bronze.
Bronze medal contest: Fares Mekhoukh (FRA) vs Yuta Kasai (JPN)
The first score of the contest came in the first minute. The two judoka had been threatening pick-ups and other attacks for some seconds when Kasai launched Mekhoukh with an enormous sasai-tsuri-komi-ashi. It was given a waza-ari score. Then, just inside the last minute, Kasai did it again, logged a second waza-ari with an identical sasai to win his first World Judo Tour medal.
