Roberto Orlando declared, "Receiving the ICM award and the invitation to present the Judo for Peace activities to the prestigious ICM Global Martial Arts Forum in South Korea is the greatest token of recognition for the work of the International Judo Federation and its partner national federations in utilising the principles of judo to restore peace, promote social inclusion and foster youth development in communities that are affected by conflict, violence and inequality through the Judo for Peace programme.
This achievement truly represents a reward for the many people believing in the healing power of judo, the efficacy of its moral code for moulding positive citizens and more harmonious societies."
During the application process, the IJF had explained that, "We are thrilled to nominate Mr Roberto Orlando for the UNESCO Martial Arts Education Award. Roberto Orlando embodies the essence of martial arts education, combining his passion for the sport with a deep commitment to participating in activities for positive change in communities worldwide.
His journey began in Africa where he dedicated himself to social and human development initiatives in conflict-affected regions. Through his work with various non-governmental organisations, Roberto witnessed firsthand the transformative impact that judo can have on individuals, particularly children and youth facing adversity."
As a certified judo coach from the IJF Academy, Roberto Orlando has been at the forefront of promoting judo as a vehicle for peace and social cohesion. Since 2017, he has spearheaded the IJF Judo for Peace South Africa programme, which has served as a beacon of hope for thousands of children and youth at risk. By establishing several judo dojo facilities in underserved areas and partnering with governmental departments and corporate sponsors, Roberto has created opportunities for marginalised young people to engage in sport and develop essential life skills.
IJF President, Marius Vizer, declared, "One of Roberto's most significant achievements is his leadership in developing a professional development course for aspiring judo coaches within the Judo for Peace programme. By providing training and employment opportunities, he has empowered young individuals to become agents of change in their communities, thereby contributing to sustainable development and social cohesion.
Moreover, Roberto's collaboration with the UNHCR in Southern Africa, to promote the Sport for Development Pledge, highlights his commitment to leveraging sport as a tool for achieving broader development goals and advancing human rights. His tireless advocacy for the educational values of judo, rooted in the moral principles of discipline, respect, and mutual prosperity, epitomises the spirit of martial arts education espoused by UNESCO."
The awards ceremony will take place during the upcoming ICM 2024 Global Martial Arts Forum in October 2024.
ICM
The ICM is a centre under the auspices of UNESCO, established on 19th December 2016 by an agreement between the government of the Republic of Korea and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The Centre is located in Chungju City, the home of Taekkyeon, which is included on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Martial Arts hold immense value as they developed naturally alongside human history. Therefore, the centre is committed to preserving existing martial arts and passing them along to future generations.
The ICM also strives to implement research initiatives and different forms of experiential and educational programmes to promote the flourishing of martial arts in contemporary society, moving beyond the confines of the past. The ICM provides many different opportunities where young people can realise their own potential and become fulfilled by actively engaging in their communities. The ICM promotes a culture of peace and non-violence and enhances the protection of cultural diversity, all of which serve to fulfill UNESCO's mission.
