Winner in Baku earlier this season, the Hungarian judoka, who is coming from a lower category, has already shown that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the -70 kg category and she was indeed the one who made the difference, before advancing another notch against Kelly Petersen-Pollard (GBR) in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-finals, Szofi Ozbas faced Giovanna Scoccimarro (GER) and for the second consecutive time, the Hungarian reached a grand slam final.
In the second half of the draw, it was Sanne Van Dijke (NED), fifth at the last Olympic Games and winner in Zagreb in September, who emerged with a place in the final, after another tournament favourite, Miriam Butkereit (GER), was eliminated early.
The final opposed Szofi Ozbas (HUN) and Sanne Van Dijke (NED). At the end of a balanced contest, Szofi Ozbas launched a seoi-otoshi but as Van Dijke was going to the other side to avoid being thrown, Ozbas totally switched sides and threw her with another seoi-otoshi on the other arm for waza-ari; well felt and well done. This was for a second gold medal in a row in that category. Szofi Ozbas has put her footprint on the -70kg group.
The first bronze medal contest opposed Madina Taimazova (IJF) and Ida Ericsson (SWE), who had a chance to add one more medal for Sweden after Tara Babulfath’s on day one. Unfortunately or the Swedish athlete, she couldn't compete for the medal and the victory went to Madina Taimazova.
Adelina Novitzki (ISR) and Giovanna Scoccimarro (GER) were qualified for the second bronze medal contest. Against the run of play, Adelina Novitzki countered Scoccimarro for a yuko a handful of seconds before the final gong. The bronze medal was for Adelina Novitzki.
