Austria staged a fantastic event, aside from the medals and the ranking points that the athletes were focused on. It is often overlooked just how much effort goes into ensuring every aspect of a World Judo Tour event goes smoothly. Transport, accreditation, provision of accommodation, volunteer support, security, media personnel, there is so much to consider and in Linz, the Austrian Judo Federation really got it right.
There were some details so well thought through, making both the live experience and the streaming very high quality, such as the beautifully hung flags, the inclusion of Michalea Polleres, Austrian double Olympic medallist, in the opening ceremony or the very visible volunteers who were available all tasks that kept things running efficiently. Congratulations to federation President Dr Martin Poiger and his team!
As the third and final day came to a close and the 52 delegations prepared to leave, it was still Japan at the top of the table. With the gold and silver of the +78 kg category France jumped from 29th to 5th on the list, a notable jump, facilitated by two incredible juniors who stretched themselves perfectly to reach their first IJF senior podium
Finally, huge congratulations to Bernd Fasching who delivered a career best performance in front of his home supporters who were thrilled to applaud him all the way to the podium. The hosts winning medals is one of the best parts of any event as the atmosphere finds a new design and everyone loves it. Fasching was the author of a great day for Austria.
