Jorge FONSECA (POR) has had the best day of his career so far having won all four of his contests to power into the last four as he chases more silverware for Portugal who took a silver medal on Thursday.

Olympic silver medallist Elmar GASIMOV (AZE) caught the eye in the preliminaries as he dispatched contender after contender including European Games winner Arman ADAMIAN (RUS) and Ireland’s Ben FLETCHER (GBR) as well as three-time Grand Slam winner and world number two Michael Korrel.

Defending champion CHO Guham (KOR) was on form as he went three for three including a golden score win over former world champion WOLF Aaron (JPN).

World bronze medallist Niyaz ILYASOV (RUS) kept his eye on the gold medal after going unbeaten in the fourth and final pool having secured notables wins over the likes of the in-form Shady ELNAHAS (CAN) and veteran Cyrille MARET (FRA).

Two-time world champion Mayra AGUIAR (BRA) was in devastating form in the preliminaries as she won all three of her contests by ippon to ease into the last four.

European Games bronze medallist Madeleine MALONGA (FRA) matched the record of AGUIAR as she went three for three with all victories coming by the maximum score.

European Games winner Klara APOTEKAR (SLO) won all four of her bouts to seal a spot in the last four.

Defending world champion HAMADA Shori (JPN) produced a faultless display as she charged into the semi-finals with three ippons from three contests.
