It is with immense sadness that we report the death of Dr Klaus Friedrich, who passed away yesterday after a long illness. Dr Friedrich was 76 years old.
Dr. Klaus Friedrich

Dr Friedrich was an Olympic referee and, for many years, a member of the Refereeing Commission of the German Judo Federation. He was, therefore, one of the main protagonists responsible for the excellent development of the German arbitration system. In 2000 he was honoured with the presentation of his 7th dan, for his outstanding contribution to the sport of judo.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Klaus Friedrich refereed not only many international tournaments, but also the European Championships, the World Championships in Essen and Belgrade in 1987 and 1989 and the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. In 1996 and 2000, in Atlanta and Sydney respectively, he was a referee at the Paralympic Games. In his very active career he was the most successful referee in Germany.

For many years he was also a member of the judging committee of the German Judo Federation (DJB) and trained numerous judges. He was part of a team responsible for the positive development of guardianship at the DJB. Many of his protégés were later successful internationally and are now active in leadership positions at DJB.

Even away from the tatami, the judoka, born in 1945, left his mark. As a scientist, he achieved international fame and remains one of the top 100 international materials scientists today.

The International Judo Federation offers its deepest condolences to the family of an illustrious member of the judo community. Rest in peace, Doctor Friedrich.
