The penultimate event of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, began today in the Emirati capital. 448 judoka representing 77 nations from five continents have gathered together to share honours and precious Olympic qualification points. For this first day, the five lightweight categories were in action: -48kg, -60kg, -52kg, -66kg and -57kg.

Abu Dhabi offers an opportunity to reunite with the competitors that we had the chance to follow throughout a season which was rich in twists and turns and which began in January with the Portugal Grand Prix, followed by many events including the World Championships Doha 2023. Months have passed, months which have kept the suspense without interruption.

Today, once again, the display of high level judo was at its peak, with current world champions, world and Olympic medallists looking for the result that would guarantee their presence next year in Paris for the Olympic Games. For many others, who are still looking for a first participation in the Games, Abu Dhabi is a compulsory step.

In the other categories, France and Georgia won their gold medal while Canada confirmed domination in the -57kg category with the two worlds champions, Deguchi and Klimkait, facing off for the glory, having in mind that everything is still possible for next year’s qualification for the Olympic Games.
