Some years ago, Julien decided to travel the world from one dojo to another with his judogi as almost his only company. Since the beginning of his incredible adventure, we have been following him step by step. Discover a new page of his judo anthology.

"Last time, I left you in Glasgow, heading towards Dublin, Ireland, to continue my journey. Organising this leg of the trip wasn’t easy. Initially, I planned to take a boat from Glasgow to Belfast (Northern Ireland) but I couldn’t secure any positive responses. Given that these countries are far above my usual budget, I decided to head straight to Dublin to maximise my chances of finding judo contacts in the capital.

A Warm Welcome in Dublin

I was lucky to connect with Omar who has been following my project and offered both accommodation and contacts in Dublin. My first stop was Yoroi Dojo, led by Sensei Anderson Dos Santos, a Brazilian now living in Ireland. Anderson’s approach resonated deeply with me. He’s passionate about the social impact of judo, inspired by the famous Brazilian programmes that use judo to uplift children. His focus on helping them regain physical interaction post-covid was inspiring. Although my visit was short, it left a strong impression and gave me great motivation for what was to come.

Exploring More Clubs and Universities

The next stop was Wild Geese Judo, where I found a sticker left by my French friend Morgan Girardeau, who had concluded his world judo tour in Ireland years ago. The club's coach, Donnal Tannam, is a true inspiration. 65 years old, still teaching daily, he competed at the World Championships Veterans in Las Vegas!

I also had the pleasure of visiting Dublin University Judo Club at Trinity College, an historical landmark in Ireland. Teaching in universities is always a highlight of my journey and Trinity’s famous Long Room Library was a perfect backdrop for a YouTube video about the connection between judo and culture.

Northern Ireland Adventures

While my plans in the Irish countryside didn’t materialise, I received an invitation from Abbey Judo Club in Northern Ireland, led by William. Together, we explored Belfast’s rich history, including a behind-the-scenes of Game of Thrones experience and the remnants of the Titanic. William’s warm hospitality extended to his dojo where I had a great session and even received some warm clothing that has been a lifesaver in colder climates!

Building Friendships in Drogheda

Next, I headed to Drogheda, where I met Sensei David Dupré, a fellow Frenchman, and his colleague Leo, a breathing specialist for athletes. In just a few years, David has grown his club from scratch into a thriving community. While they originally planned an ice bath challenge for me, thankfully cancelled, we visited cultural sites nearby instead and shared meaningful conversations about judo and life.

UCD Judo Club: A Friendly Rivalry

To wrap up my time in Dublin, I visited UCD Judo Club, where I taught students ranging from beginners to advanced practitioners. Led by another French coach, the club has a friendly rivalry with Trinity College, competing in a team event the same week. After training, I joined the students at their university restaurant and bar, sharing stories late into the night, a fitting farewell before my early departure to Iceland.

Reflecting on Ireland

Ireland was initially challenging, with many opportunities arising only as I prepared to leave. Despite this, I made meaningful connections, particularly with Isa from Trinity, who hosted me. I left Ireland with more friends, knowledge and a strong feeling that I could make an even greater impact if I return in the future, something that feels likely, given the proximity to France.

Next Stop: Iceland!

Now, I’m preparing to explore the land of ice and fire. While my budget is stretched thin between Ireland and preparing for the next season, I’m excited for this final chapter of Season 3. Step by step, we’ll make it to every country on this journey!

Thank you for your continued support; don’t forget to follow the project across all platforms. Let’s keep building this incredible community!"
