At the beginning of the final day of competition, it was notable that the Kazakh flag had appeared above the podium more times than that of any other country across the first two days of the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam.
Three medallists from the host team stood on the -60 kg podium.

A gold and the chance to hear the Kazakh national anthem ring out in the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace was still yearned for but no matter which nation delivered great judo, the spectators applauded and cheered because in Astana everyone loves good judo, all good judo.

In fact the applause wasn’t only for the judoka; the Kazakh referees also received great cheers and encouragement throughout the weekend. It was a similar story in Dushanbe last week and is often experienced in Paris too. This is the kind of respect we find in judo at all levels and it is great to see all sectors recognised for their commitment to the sport.

As the curtain comes down in Astana, the Kazakhstan Judo Federation can be proud of their team and of the event they gave to the judo family. This was the last grand slam before June delivers the flagship event of the year, the 2025 Hungary World Championships, and it has been perfect preparation for many who will compete there.

For now, Kazakhstan turns its attention to the IBSA World Championships being held from 13th to 15th May in the very same arena as this grand slam.
