Koshiki-no-kata (古式の形) corresponds to the form of ancient things. It is one of the seven official kata of the Kodokan, also recognised by the IJF. It comprises 21 techniques.
The founder of judo, Jigoro Kano Shihan, revised these ancestral techniques and incorporated them into a kata to preserve the historical source of judo. This set of techniques is ancient and was originally intended for the wrestling of armoured warriors during the feudal era.
Therefore, the kata must be performed by imagining both practitioners wearing armour. On the occasion of the Reims IJF Kata World Series 2025, Franck Lerosey (6th dan) in the role of tori and Jean-Marie Mahieu (7th dan) in the role of uke gave a magnificent demonstration of koshiki-no-kata, to the music of The Last Samurai by Hans Zimmer.
