The news of the death of a member of the judo family is always heartbreaking. When this passing concerns a renowned athlete, at the age of only 34, it adds even more pain.
While the announcement was made by the Cuban Judo Federation, the death of Cuban Maricet Espinosa, affectionately nicknamed ‘La Mole,’ stunned everyone.
Maricet Espinosa won the Pan American championship titles in 2013 and 2014. She was also a medallist many times on the World Judo Tour and contributed to Cuba's world team bronze medal in 2012. She participated in the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.
Her charisma was not limited to her presence on the tatami. She was also involved in humanitarian projects and social causes.
We extend our condolences to her family, her loved ones and the entire Cuban judo family. She will now shine in the sky for all those she inspired.
