Ibáñez went on to accumulate a series of notable international results. He captured a bronze medal at the Brazil World Cup in Belo Horizonte in 2008, preceded by a silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and another silver at the Pan American Championships in Miami in 2008. In 2005, he had already secured a bronze at the Pan American Championships, marking his rise among the continent’s elite judoka.
His leadership skills soon proved as strong as his competitive spirit. After retiring from competition, he became President of the Ecuadorian Judo Federation, guiding the sport through a period of steady development and increased visibility. One of his most significant contributions came in 2022, when he served as both organiser and President of the Local Organising Committee for the Junior World Championships in Guayaquil, an event widely recognised as a major success and a source of pride for the country’s judo community.
Recently, Roberto Ibáñez was appointed to an important new role within the Ecuadorian government. Announcing the news, he said, “I have the pleasure of informing you that I have been appointed by the President of the Republic of Ecuador as the new Deputy Minister of Education, Sport and Culture. Please rest assured of my unwavering commitment to continuing to strengthen the sport of judo in my country, from wherever I may be.”
This appointment serves as a testament to his sporting achievements and also his dedication to developing judo at every level. Under his leadership, Ecuadorian judo has continued to grow, producing new talent and expanding its international presence.
His journey, from history-making athlete to federation leader and now Deputy Minister, is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact that sport can have on a nation’s cultural and educational landscape. Congratulations to Roberto Ibáñez!
