Sajjad Sehen, representing the Republic of Iraq with a wild card in the -81kg category, was tested out-of-competition on 23rd July by the IOC. The analysis of Sample A revealed 2 different anabolic androgenic steroids.

On 26th July the International Testing Agency (ITA), acting on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), informed the athlete of the findings and imposed an immediate provisional suspension, revoking the athlete’s right to train or compete at the Olympic Games. The ITA simultaneously instructed the IJF to withdraw the athlete from the draw until further notice. The athlete was informed of his right to request the B sample analysis, also to appeal the provisional suspension.

The athlete appealed the provisional suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Anti-doping Division. The hearing took place on 28th July where the athlete was represented by experienced sports lawyers of the Paris Bar Pro Bono counsel programme for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

After the hearing, CAS decided to uphold the original decision.

The results management phase of the case, the determination of the applicable sanction, may begin upon the assertion of the Anti-doping Rule Violation by the IOC. Any decision in the case is going to be published on the IJF Clean Judo website under ‘Cases’ at https://www.ijf.org/cleanjudo/3725
