Among the many nations that celebrated World Judo Day 2025 with remarkable enthusiasm, Azerbaijan stood out once again for its passion and commitment to the sport. The country, well known for its deep-rooted love of judo, will also host the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku. Across the nation, a variety of engaging activities and educational events were organised to mark this important day dedicated to judo’s universal values.

One of the highlights was the ‘First Step to Judo’ campaign, a large-scale education initiative launched across the regions to encourage young people to discover judo. Meetings were held with schoolchildren in cities such as Sumgayit, Nakhchivan and Ganja, as well as other regions.

They took part in interactive sessions and games designed to introduce them to the philosophy and practice of judo, while receiving motivational gifts. The campaign will continue to expand to other parts of the country in the months ahead.

Another activity, ‘Family Day,’ took place under the theme Peace, Unity and Friendship. This event brought together participants of all ages, including parents and children, offering them the chance to experience judo together. Through fun and practical exercises, they learned about teamwork, respect and safe movement, key principles that extend far beyond the tatami.

Celebrations also reached the streets of the capital through the ‘City Tour’ initiative. A specially branded bus travelled through the main avenues of Baku, sharing the message of World Judo Day with the wider public. Citizens had the opportunity to learn about the values and benefits of judo and how the sport contributes to personal growth and social harmony.

Interest in judo in Azerbaijan continues to grow rapidly. In recent years, Azerbaijani judoka have raised the national flag proudly on the world’s most prestigious stages. The achievements of Olympic and world champions such as Hidayat Heydarov and Zelym Kotsoiev have brought immense pride and joy to many people, inspiring new generations to follow their path.

The federation’s commitment to expanding judo’s reach throughout the regions, building new training centres, conducting awareness programmes for schoolchildren and offering continuous education for coaches and referees has been instrumental. Moreover, inclusive and mass-participation initiatives ensure that the values of judo, such as respect, friendship and mutual understanding, remain accessible to everyone.

Through its actions, Azerbaijan has embodied the essence of World Judo Day 2025: Judo for Peace, demonstrating how the sport can bring people together, strengthen communities and foster harmony across generations.
