In the +100 kg final, Kanan Nasibov (AZE) and Jur Spijkers (NED) were both committed to winning the biggest prize of the day but of course only one could win. Spijkers appeared to be more active initially but an o-uchi-gari attack cost him dearly, Nasibov winning with a massive o-uchi-gaeshi.
The first bronze medal contest featured Dzhamal Gamzatkhanov (AZE) and Saba Inaneishvili (GEO), the latter being more active. Almost at the end of normal time, he threw for a waza-ari with makikomi before finishing on the ground with a juji-gatame for ippon.
The second bronze medal was fought for by Tieman Diaby (FRA) and Stephan Hegyi (AUT) who engaged in a 2 minute gripping battle before the acceleration happened. It was Hegyi who made a break for it catching Diaby sweetly with an okuri-ashi-barai for waza-ari, shocking his opponent. This should have pushed Diaby to attack more but instead he tried to grip more powerfully without many attacks, perhaps the wrong tactic against the more mobile Austrian.
With only half a minute left on the clock, Diaby realised what he had to do and began to attack with makikomi, ashi-guruma and more but it was too late. Hegyi enjoyed the fruit from an exceptional moment of skill and left with a bronze medal for his trouble.
