In an open category, the first of the final block on day 3 in Ulaanbaatar, it was Umar Bozorov (UZB) and Riku Okada (JPN) who stepped up to crown themselves, reaching the final after a fine day of judo. There can only be one winner though and so they set about executing their game plans.

Final, Umar Bozorov (UZB) vs Riku Okada (JPN)

Okada worked hard to maintain the right distance and succeeded, using the space to prepare a well-timed o-uchi-gari which scored a yuko. He then turned Bozorov over and held him for ippon. This is Okada’s first grand slam gold medal.

Bronze medal contest, Yermakhan Anuarbekov (KAZ) vs Israpil Sagaipov (BRN)

The first bronze medal of the group went to Israpil Sagaipov (BRN) with little argument from Yermakhan Anuarbekov (KAZ). He scored a yuko almost straight away and then after almost no more time had passed, he used a combination ko-uchi-gari and ashi-guruma to register an ippon on the scoreboard and win his first grand slam medal. It was an excellent display.

Bronze medal contest, Umedjon Rajabov (TJK) vs Ikhvan Edilsultanov (IJF)

In the second bronze medal contest Umedjon Rajabov (TJK) and Edilsultanov (IJF). It was a close contest, just a shido each earned as they approached the last minute, but then Edilsultanov countered a poorly prepared attack and placed a waza-ari on the board. Rajabov had only 43 seconds to equalise but his effort was futile. Ikhvan Edilsultanov had won his first World Judo Tour medal.

Medals, cheques and flowers were presented by Mr Armen Bagdasarov, IJF Head Referee Director, and Mr Dagvadorj Badambazar, Vice President of the Mongolia Judo Association
