On 19th November 2024, the International Judo Federation (IJF) Headquarters in Budapest had the distinct honour of hosting the President of Kazakhstan, His Excellency Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The Kazakh President was welcomed by IJF President Mr Marius L. Vizer.

The visit underscored the deep connection between Kazakhstan and the global judo community, highlighting the nation's strong tradition and commitment to the sport. Kazakhstan has played a consistent and important role in the development of judo in Central Asia and on the world stage. Kazakh athletes achieve excellence on the World Judo Tour regularly, culminating in Olympic gold in Paris for Yeldos Smetov.

During the meeting, President Vizer and President Tokayev engaged in discussions around key topics, including the development of judo as a tool for education, cultural exchange and social unity. The leaders also explored opportunities to enhance the collaboration between the IJF and Kazakhstan to promote the values of discipline, respect and fairness that judo represents.

President Vizer also took the opportunity to highlight a significant event in the 2027 calendar, planned to take place in Astana: the 2027 world championships. This marks a milestone for the country as it further solidifies its status as a premier destination for international judo.

“We are honoured to welcome His Excellency, President Tokayev to the IJF headquarters. We are thrilled that Kazakhstan will host the world championships in 2027. This event will not only showcase the nation’s exceptional organisational capabilities but also its deep passion for judo," said President Vizer. "Astana will provide a world-class stage for athletes and fans alike, bringing the global judo community together."

The visit included a tour of the IJF Headquarters, showcasing the organisation’s initiatives in sport development, education and humanitarian activities. President Vizer also highlighted the upcoming events on the judo calendar and Kazakhstan's continued involvement in promoting sport.

The IJF and Kazakhstan share a history of fruitful collaboration, with the nation hosting international judo tournaments frequently and contributing to the sport’s legacy. This visit serves as another benchmark in the partnership.
