Every year, the International Judo Federation and the whole judo community celebrate World Judo Day on 28th October. This day represents a lot for all the judo fans around the world as it is the birthday of the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano Shihan. The theme in 2024 is WELLBEING.

Wellbeing is a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.

In the lead-up to World Judo Day, we will describe how you can activate your judo community at a local, regional and international level. In this second article, we are focusing on the mental dimension of wellbeing, which is a very important aspect when practising the sport.

Good mental health means we can realise our full potential and feel safe and secure. It also means we thrive in everyday life. Mental wellbeing is our internal positive view that we are coping well psychologically with the everyday stresses of life and can work productively and fruitfully. Here is what you can do on WJD.

Mindfulness and Meditation Sessions

Introduce regular mindfulness and meditation sessions as part of a judo training programme. These can help athletes and practitioners manage stress, improve focus and enhance overall mental clarity, which are crucial both on the mat and in life.

Mental Health Awareness Campaigns

Launch campaigns that educate your judo community about the importance of mental health. This could include talks by mental health professionals, the distribution of educational materials, and personal stories from judoka who have dealt with mental health challenges.

Stress Management Workshops

Offer workshops on stress management techniques tailored to judoka. These could cover topics like coping with competition anxiety, balancing training with life responsibilities, and building resilience.

These are just a few examples of what can be done to promote mental wellbeing on World Judo Day and it is possible to combine several activities. You are totally free to invent activities according to your needs and the needs of your judoka. Don't forget to let us know how you see the promotion of mental wellbeing for judo people and what you will do on World Judo Day, by sending us your feedback to [email protected]

Until 28th October, be well and be mentally well!
