Every year, the International Judo Federation and the whole judo community celebrate World Judo Day on 28th October. This day represents a lot for all the judo fans around the world as it is the birthday of the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano Shihan. The theme in 2024 is WELLBEING.

Wellbeing is a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.

In the lead-up to World Judo Day, we will describe how you can activate your judo community at a local, regional and international level. In this first article, we are focusing on the physical dimension of wellbeing, which is the most obvious consequence of practising the sport.

Physical wellbeing is practising self-care for the needs of the body. This includes physical activity, balanced nutrition, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful behaviours.

Judo Fitness Challenges

Thus, On WJD you can, for example, organise judo fitness challenges that encourage judoka of all levels to participate. These could include endurance drills (the more uchi-komi or nage-komi possible within a timeframe for example), strength training (the most press-ups, burpees possible...), and flexibility exercises, with a focus on the physical benefits of regular judo practice. All challenges should be connected with the practice of judo.

Nutrition Workshops

Host workshops or webinars led by sports nutritionists and specialists, focusing on the dietary needs of judoka. These sessions could cover topics like optimal nutrition for training, competition day meals and the role of diet in recovery and performance enhancement.

Training Programmation Workshops!

With expert coaches, organise workshops for judoka to learn more about training programmes and the benefits of training regularly to reach objectives.

Health Screenings

Partner with healthcare providers to offer free or discounted health screenings for judoka, including checks for common issues like joint health, cardiovascular fitness, and BMI (Body Mass Index) assessments.

These are just a few examples of what can be done to promote physical wellbeing on World Judo Day and it is possible to combine several activities. You are totally free to invent activities according to your needs and the needs of your judoka. Don't forget to let us know how you see the promotion of physical wellbeing for judo people and what you will do on World Judo Day, by sending us your feedback to [email protected]

Until 28th October, be well and be physically well!
