The last category to assign medals on this last day of the OTP Group Tashkent Grand Slam was, as always, the heaviest of the men’s categories. The Yunusobod Sport Complex was filled with cheers as the first contest of the category offered the home team one more chance for a medal with Utkirbek Turoboyev and Alisher Yusupov meeting to fight for the first of the two bronze medals.
Bronze medal contest, Utkirbek Turoboyev (UZB) vs Alisher Yusupov (UZB)

Yusupov, an experienced and highly decorated judoka, came out without hesitation and attacked immediately with sumi-gaeshi. He earned himself a waza-ari and almost concluded on the floor, but for Turoboyev’s dynamic escape. The scoreline did not change for the rest of the contest and Yusupov was the winner of the bronze medal.

Bronze medal contest, Marek-Adrian Masak (EST) vs Andy Granda (CUB)

2022 world champion Andy Granda (CUB), who won that title here in Tashkent, had been sure he would reach the final but Batchaev (IJF) had other ideas, beating him in the semi-final, and so he needed to pass Marek-Adrian Masak of Estonia to still find his way to the podium. Granda made light work of it, finishing the contest on the floor with a perfectly cemented pin; the bronze was his.

Gold medallist, Denis Batchaev (IJF)

Denis Batchaev and Valerii Endovitskii (IJF) fought for the last gold medal of the tournament. It was a tactical contest with a number of attacks close to the criteria for scoring but in the end Batchaev was the winner on penalties. This is his first gold medal at grand slam level.

Medals, cheques and flowers were presented by Mr Armen Bagdasarov, IJF Head Referee Director, and Mr Aziz Sobirov, Secretary General of the Judo Federation of Uzbekistan
