Assured of a medal either way, the crowd was behind both fighters, chanting, cheering and banging drums to spur them on. Bakhtiyorov gave an inspired display, throing for yuko, waza-ari and finally ippon and was emtional to win this medal at home.
Cedric Revol and Anvarjon Ibrohimov then came to the tatami in an all-action medal contest. Revol already has 8 grand slam medals to his name while 20-year-old Ibrohimov has yet to register a result on the World Judo Tour. He worked hard throughout the contest, more active than his French opponent and Revol sooon earned two penalties but that didn’t stop him being dangerous, poised to take advantage at any moment. He was unable to do so though as the Uzbek youngster kept the pace high and forced a third shido for his rival. The bronze medal would remain in Uzbekistan.
Ayub Bliev (IJF), spectacular all day, and Turan Bayramov (AZE) were keen to take a first gold for their respective nation. It was Bliev who realised that goal as he countered a ko-soto-gake from Bayramov for ippon. Blieve takes gold while Azerbaijan’s Turan Bayramov has to settle for silver.
